Development partner of automobile manufacturers

The development process for a new glow plug lasts about twelve to 18 months. In close cooperation with the engineers of the automobile manufacturers, prototypes are developed and tested until all specifications are fulfilled and series production can start.

In the year 2005 NGK experienced a European premiere. VW was the first European manufacturer to use a glow plug with a full ceramic heating element for the series production of its diesel engines with a particle filter: the NHTC or New High-Temperature Ceramic glow plug. In the same year, Mitsubishi also decided to use the new technology. And since 2007 Mercedes is also using it in diesel engines. Today, NGK has already manufactured 10 million NHTC glow plugs for delivery to automobile manufacturers.

Another current example: diverse metal pin-type glow plugs delivered by NGK to the PSA Peugeot Citroën group. They are found in smaller diesel engines as standard equipment, for example in the Peugeot 206 and 207, the Ford Ka and the Toyota AYGO, but also in top-range models such as the Peugeot 407, 607 and 807 and the Citroën C5 and C6.
